There’s always been a perception that young people wearing hoodies indicates something sinister or “gangster” like – and those that harbor such feelings should probably read something else in view of the subject of this article: The Goggle Hoodie.

The Goggle Hoodie appears even more diabolical in nature, as it looks like something in a futuristic holocaust survival movie, with only two small holes for eyes showing.

The hoodie cost sthe buyer £70, although Armani and other upscale clothing companies have sold these for as much as £600.

Marc Chapman, manager of Arrival Menswear in South Shields, Tyneside, indicated demand has been very strong for these intimidating new hoodies. “They’re fantastic, cheap and they’re selling really well,” Marc stated. “They look really unusual but lock in plenty of warmth in the winter.”

Many others indicate these are rather nasty and foreboding in appearance, an image not lost on the manufacturers and in fact used to market the item themselves: one package displays a missile on the bag holding them. Some asked indicated they would be quite startled by seeing gang of youngsters wearing these hoodies.

A Northumbria Police spokesman did state there was nothing illegal about wearing the hoodies: “A hat, scarf and glasses combination could obscure someone’s identity so there are no powers to stop people wearing these jackets.” the spokesman pointed out, which is a valid point. Hat and glasses worn the right way could be just as spooky looking. It goes to show people that a perception of someone can be affected by the attire they wear.

Little Jay Cowper was wrapped up against the cold wearing his favourite grey hoody, but both he and his grandfather were asked to leave Monkton Stores in York.

The employees at the store were insistent that they had a very clear policy on ‘no hoodies’ because of their recent trouble with teenager yobs who wear also wearing hoodies.

The boy’s grandmother, Brenda Cowper, the boy;s grandmother labeled the staff descison as ludicrous. She said: ‘ He’s just a 2 year old baby, what on earth are they thinking. Although there’s a few kids round here that cause trouble, they’re usually in their teens – not 2 years old. It’s a bit pathetic really, and I certainly won’t be shopping there.’

Her husband refused to take Jay’s hood down as a matter of principle and left the shop, she said.

Last year, 47-year-old nurse Lorraine Robinson was refused to be served at the store for exactly the same reason.

Over in the USA, over 350,000 hoodies have been withdrawn from sale following the death of a three-year-old boy who died when his hoodie drawstring got caught on a playground set.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission agency said the drawstrings should be removed immediately.

The sweatshirts, Kid Pullover Hood Sweatshirt and Kid Zipper Sweatshirt with Hood, were made by Hill Sportswear Inc. of Paramount, California.

This sinister picture of today’s British youth cultrue was unveiled the same weekend when Boris Johnson was elected mayor of London.

Johnson has promised to tackle youth crime which he described as “the apex of a pyramid of violence, thuggery and bullying that is making life less pleasant for everyone in the city”.

This particular photograph was taken at the Cans Festival on Leake Street in May 2008.

The image has since been painted over.
